Chapter Seven: The Roving problem

Despite the horrible burrow raid and the loss of two pups, the Isikaras weren't worst off. Izzy's little son Harry made it and the next month he got three playmates in the form of Sundance's fifth litter.

The group had seen no sign of the Cinnbars or Vyrwolves, and food was still plentiful, no worse dangerous can, although there were a few times the retreat to the bolt hole was in play.

All four pups soon went out foraging and Sundance watched fondly as the pups learned how to get their own food, there wasn't much luck.

Harry was more interested in playing with his mother's tail. While Boots and Mocha didn't really do much, even their father walked up to them with a skink in his mouth they didn't know that they were suppose to eat it.

Their older sister Hotspot, however, got into the action and was most likely the first and only pup who got a taste of solid food. Envy wasn't really happy that her little sister took her scorpion.

At midday the group retreated to the shade for a siesta, but of course the guards were posted. Amongst them was Bronze from Sundance's first litter.

At one, he and his sisters were now mature adults, not longer the babies of the group, now they were helping out with the duties, babysitting was one of those tasks, along with helping the pups learn and sentry.

Bronze was a useful sentry. With his father Indus and uncle (though not related) Saignee, they were scouting the area while the group rested and relaxed.

But they were looking out just for preditors, they were on sharp lookout for roving males from different groups, for Indus this was important because Sundance would soon be ready to mate again.

But lucky no potential suitors came calling and soon the Isikaras returned to their tasks of finding food, and this time the pups made more of a effort to find food.

But just because no rovers had showed up didn't mean there were any. Fritz began making growl calls and as the group investigated the males became agitated. The scents of two males not from their group had been left on their territory but relief quickly came when they found that the two moved on, apparently there were better prizes.

Despite the slight scare, Indus quickly stuck to Sundance's side, if a rover targeted Sundance and mated with her then he might be ousted and Indus had enough of living as a submissive male.

He would watch carefully.

Chapter Six: The Very First Burrow Raid

November and December brought more surprises, Sundance had gave birth to two more pups, which swelled the group to 15 members and both pups were doing well now. Fritz had left the group to go roving and both Asante and Velyo were doing well.

The Isikaras did have some competition froms their rivals. The Vyrwolves weren't much of a threat now since the Isikaras outnumbered them, but a new group had settled, been named and IDed and they were more of a match.

Though they had only thirdteen to the Isikaras fifthteen, they had a high-spirit, bold dominant female and a bunch of fiery blooded meerkats who were keen to fight for the things they need.

The Isikaras themselves were recovering from a recent battle with these rivals. Izzy had slowly scabbing wounds on her tail, Indus' face was healing and growing the fur he lost in the fight.

But the Isikaras manages to keep their land and for now the group was healing and had no further trouble.

The Isikaras sat sunning at their burrow. The teenagers playfight and the curious pups were getting into mischief, but under the watchful eye of Izzy and Saignee, they were kept out of serious trouble.

Sundance and Indus groomed each other, the dominant female was pregnant again and the Isikaras were destined to grow come March. And the group was doing well enough to find enough food.

---------------

When March came, Sundance gave birth to a little of three, Hedwig, Toxic, and Salem, they would be her last litter of the Rainy season and since there were no other pups, they got all the attention.

The dry passed slowly, but the group managed to keep a grip on their precious three-squared mile patch of land. The Vyrwolves had been the ones to try to make the largest raids but each time they were beaten back.

The Cinnabars were surprislely not much trouble, in fact there was neither claw nor whisker of the group, they found their own resources and so the dominant female Zoroark felt like they didn't need to fight.

------------

When the skys darkened with clouds signalling the rainy season, Sundance was pregnant once more, but so was Izzy and this could now lead to some problems. The first time Sundance tolerated Izzy's two pups, would she do it again?

Izzy, however, didn't want trouble with Sundance so she kept low and Sundance, not viewing her as a threat, let her remain in the group, this was a rare thing, yet Izzy is still a useful meerkat.

--------------------

That September Sundance gave birth to two female pups, and for the first time, her daughter Firefly became a babysitter with Bronze, it was rather boring but both meerkats did well and Needle and Hortense survived.

That October, however, things were to take a harsh turn and the Isikaras were going to face something closer to home. Could they beat it?

-------------

The Isikaras knew something was different. It was morning and almost all the group was up, including the two pups, but one meerkat hadn't surfaced. The meerkat was Izzy.

Finally a slimmer form of Izzy came up and stood on her hind legs with her coat fluffed up, soaking in the sun's rays, below group were her second litter, three male pups, but with plenty of food, Sundance didn't worry about it.

The foragers headed out with the two older pups trotting behind, but there was one problem...who was going to babysit? The task, involuntarily fell on the pups' older half-siblings, Teacup and Husk.

This was most likely a bad mistake and no the wisest choice, but there is no other meerkat who will stay behind with the two and so these two unexpirienced meerkats must do this task alone.

For a long time the two seem to do well, but they weren't the best sitters. Teacup was a timid little animal, thanks to the fact that she was the target of Envy's bullying, and she was quick to be spooked.

Husk was just plain lazy. He didn't care about the pups belowground or his littermate, to him, starving for no reason was just plain boring and as the time stretches he gets up and walks right off.

Teacup watches him and hesitates before she darts after him, she doesn't want to be left alone and the pups are no concern to her. The two teenagers will pay for this reckless act.

---------------

The Isikaras are foraging opposite of their border with the Vyrwolves and Cinnabars, therefore they have no idea of the eight meerkats that have invaded their territory and are prowling close to their burrow.

Those eight are the Vyrwolves, with their permanant squinty leader Sly-eye at the head. The group isn't doing much eating, if somebody tries to forage then they feel Sly-eye's teeth.

As the scent of Isikaras becomes stronger, the groups' face becomes quicker and soon they are running right for the Isikaras babysitting burrow where Izzy's pups are now sitting targets.

Sundance and the others don't seem to realise that their rivals have invaded their land, and the new mother Izzy doesn't know that her two children might cost her dearly.

----------

The Vyrwolves had reached the burrow and Sly-eye races foreward and goes straight under, she doesn't scentmark but seems to be intent on find the pups. The Isikaras have made a fool of her group for to long and now she was intent on revenge.

------

The two rogue babysitters didn't seem to realise that they had left their younger siblings in the firing path of their archrivals and were now trying to figure out where they were, in the typical fashion, they got themselves lost

-------

Sly-eye was search the confusing network of tunnels, getting ever so closer to Izzy's pups. Meanwhile, her followers were more interested in playfighting and didn't seem to realise that one Isikara had spotted them.

Fritz quickly runs back to the group and the Isikaras race for home.

--------

Sly-eye caught two of the pups and took them aboveground where the two were swiftly killed, she turned and went into the burrow when a alarm suddenly came up.

--------

Sundance and the Isikaras were back! And furious, the surprise attack spooked the Vyrwolves and with their leader underground, they bolted for their own territory. fifthteen meerkats again only seven, eight including Sly-eye who was retreating to see what was happen, was not in their best interest, they left their leader.

Sly-eye surfaced just in time to see her group high tail it off and realising that she could be killed, Sly-eye spat at the Isikaras then raced off after her family.

The Isikaras have won, but at what price?

-------

Izzy goes behind a bush and finds the two lifeless bodies of her pups, she cuddle them letting out whimpery chirps then dug a whole and burried them. She then turned and raced into the burrow, did Sly-eye kill all her pups?

The answer was no. To Izzy's relief, one of her pups managed to survived the burrow raid, little Harry. She lost his two older littermates but yet he lived and to Izzy that was all that mattered.

But dominant female Sundance was worried, while the group scent marked or groomed, the Dominant female sat alone looking out towards the Vyrwolves' border, the burrow raid had affected her.

The group had grown, but at a price, her arragonance had finally returned to bite her like a tick, she let Izzy have two litters without punishment, and now she realizes that she needs to be like her mother, older half-sister, and cousin. Izzy is not to have anymore pups.
